My Days...

I decided to answer this comment in a post, instead of a reply comment. I thought it might get long...not like I'll talk a lot or anything... :)

Betsy says, "You always sound SO busy! Do you ever have a lazy day? What do you do then? =) Betsy "

Well, the easiest answer is that I don't usually post about doing nothing, because I've done just that...nothing! I don't think it sounds very interesting to tell everyone that I didn't do anything! So, if you see archive posts reposted, it's either that I did nothing interesting enough to write about that day, or that I was too busy doing interesting stuff to write abuut. Probably the former, though...if I do something interesting, I'll most likely squeeze in a minute to tell y'all about it!

Lazy days? What are those? Ok, ok...yes, I do have lazy days. I guess I just don't come on here and say "I slept in today, grabbed a bagel for breakfast, left the kitchen dirty, surfed the internet with no purpose, made a sandwich for lunch, watched goofy YouTube videos, drank coffee and ate cookies, blogged about something I made last week, reheated leftovers for supper, watched a movie, and went to bed."

Now, I'm not saying that's a lazy day for me...that's a little extreme! That's just an examle of what I might say...

I have a hard time sometimes seeing normal, everyday days as productive. I guess I want to really see progress at the end of the day to feel like I've really been busy and gotten things done! Like, I'd like to see a pile of new purses, several leashes, and two batches of cookies done, you know? It's the little things I need to work on seeing as really getting something done....the dusting, cleaning the bathrooms, laundry, that sort of stuff. So, even on days where I don't really see myself as being productive, or write about getting a ton of stuff done, I will have done some of the above. I know that is an area where I need to change my viewpoint...I know once I get married and have my own family, I'll need to know for sure that I've had a good, productive day even if "all" I've done is clean the house and feed the babies! I know that those are good things, things that do matter, not how many purses I will have made! Although I would definitely like to have some sort of side business that I can work on, my focus certainly will change in that stage of my life.

I guess, in short, laziness isn't looked upon very highly around here, so it's something we try to avoid. :) It's not the best feeling in the world for everyone else to be busy out doing their work and every time they walk through the room, you're surfing random blogs or doing some other thing that has no redeeming value whatsoever!

So, today I took Dave to the eye doc, cut out some business cards I printed up, made a list of all my purses with consignment pricing, heated up lunch (leftovers,) braided some leashes, and cut out and prepped a lot of other leashes for braiding...onces I'd like to finish tomorrow. I worked on supper some with Mom, and then did more work in my shop after supper. I came back to the house and helped Dad finish a Scrabble game he was tired of, and sat down here, to talk to y'all! Now I'll finish cleaning the kitchen up, get myself cleaned up and get to bed. Mom doesn't feel well, so I'll be up early tomorrow to babysit. When I write it all out like that, it looks like I've been running all day, but I don't really feel like I've had  busy day. Everything I've done today was done on my time, when I wanted to do it, working around other things that needed doing.

I hope I answered your comment thoroughly enough....maybe even too thoroughly, you think? I knew I'd probably end up going on and on, which is why I decided on a full post to expound!

I have two recipes that I'll be posting soon, and I already have all the pictures ready, so it's just a matter of writing out the recipes and posting them. I'm working really hard on my leatherwork to get to a self-imposed deadline (Friday, actually) so I'll most likely be working at that all day tomorrow. I'll try to squeeze a recipe for y'all in there sometime, though!

See ya! :)

Sewing

So, today I did a lot of sewing. I got a special order that needs to go out tomorrow, and while I was sewing it, I went ahead and made four of the same things. It's faster for me that way...to be able to cut out four of each piece, sew all of the same pieces together at the same time, etc. It helped that I was making everything the same color today, so I never even had to change my thread out! I'd like to sort all of my fabric into stacks for the different products, an then spend a whole week sewing notebook holders, another week just sewing one style of my purses, etc. That would do wonders for my stash!

I'll be taking some of my products (purses mostly) to an arts and crafts store this week to be sold on consignment. Hopefully that'll do pretty well and get a little cash flow going here! Even if purses don't move fast, they'll go faster than sitting in my living room! Mom says I should send samples to some of the stores she's selling soap to, so I'll probably do that soon.

After I finished the special order today, I decided to use up all of my gingham making shopping bags. I bought several yards of gingham a long time ago, in a few different colors. I also have a bolt of muslin just laying around...it was orginally going to be petticoats, but not today. So, I combined the gingham and muslin, and I'm making "green" shopping bags. After I get going and get an assembly line of sorts set up, I'll be able to turn these bags out pretty quickly, and be able to sell them for a little cheaper. I whipped one up just to see if I thought it was a good idea, and it didn't take any time at all...and I was designing it at the same time. So, I figured they'd go really fast if I had a set idea of what I was doing to start with! I'm planning on spending tomorrow making several of them so I can take them to the store maybe Wednesday.

I've also been braiding a lot of leather. I'm in no hurry, so I'm not working myself to death doing that. It doesn't take any time at all to get blisters braiding this stuff, so I'm taking it slow...a few leashes now and a few more in a hour, that sort of thing. I already have some blisters, but they're not bad and I'm trying to keep them that way! I'm also trying to decide what order to make the leashes in...I'm switching things up from how I used to make them, spending a little more time on each one making sure it's prefect. They were nice before, but this time...this time they'll be perfect! I'm enjoying spending more time on little extra things on each leash...things that don't have to be done, and things that can't be done when you're pressed for time, but they sure make a difference. Anyway, I have a ton of braiding to get done, and while I'm not really in a big hurry, I do have that annoying insurance bill problem, so I'm not sitting around doing nothing here. If these things sell, I'll be fine...I certainly have enough of them...somewhere around 150 of them, I think.

Time to get the dogs fed and get to bed. The weather here has been great today...we've had the windows open all day! Actually, it rained all day, but that's what was great! I don't remember the last time it rained here, and it's been raining steady all day. It's been in the 60s all day, too! A vast difference from Saturday, when the thermometer read 105*!

See ya!

Little Bits of Wisdom

Originally written and posted March 30, 2010.

Lindt Dark Chocolate Lindor Truffles have an extraordinary smooth, silky, chocolate interior, which is solid at room temperature. 85* is not considered room temperature, and when Lindt Dark Chocolate Lindor Truffles are consumed in such an environment, results can be rather…explosive. It’s a wonderfully special moment, one in which you glance around quickly, and are incredibly relieved when you see no poised cameras.

Do other consistant bloggers find themselves wording blogs long before they are actually written? Talking to yourself, wording and rewording sentences?

A can of mixed, salted nuts is a wonderful thing. It’s actually a fairly dangerous thing as well. A couple of days ago, when Mom and I were at Walmart, I bought a can of mixed nuts. We ate it on the way home, and I personally nearly died of dehydration, right then and there. Mom got quite the kick out of my peril. Yesterday we had to go into town again, and it was about lunchtime. So, we grabbed what was left of the can of nuts (a poor, pitiful amount, for we are quite vicious to cans of that sort) and jumped in the truck. We drove off, and starting eating nuts furiously. That’s where the scary, dangerous aspect of the can of nuts shows itself. Have you ever tried driving down a curvy, KY road while sorting through the can of nuts that your mother is holding, and trying desperately NOT to get one of those nasty Brazil nuts? By the way, I’d like to talk to whoever declared those particular nuts edible. They certainly don’t TASTE edible, in my opinion. We’d been driving along for 10 or 15 minutes, when Mom said “were we even hungry when we got in the truck?” Good question. We ended up deciding that we were doing what we called “preventative eating.” Eating so you never feel hungry. By the way, next time, I’m only buying cashews.

Jewelweed Anti-Itch Cream

I made an insane amount of jewelweed cream this time. I will just list the steps here, with pictures, without measurments, because I really don't think you'll be making as much as I did! I scaled the recipe down and wrote a printable recipe with measurments.

So, I started by gathering lots of jewelweed and plantain. A good picture of jewelweed can be found here, while you can see plantain here. (If I ever read about a plant and want to know what it looks like so I can find it, I just google images.) You can easily find information on the benefits of both plants, so I'll just stick to how to make the cream here!

After I gathered my weeds, (this is sorta starting to sound illegal, isn't it? Yikes. I said "weeds" not "weed"...) I chopped them up pretty fine. The way I see it, you can get more out of the plants if you chop them well! I just used the leaves of the plantain, but I used the stems, leaves, and flowers of the jewelweed.

After I chopped all of that up, I spooned lard over it, and started it heating. Now, I realize a lot of people have a problem rubbing lard on their skin, so you can use whatever oil you want. But keep in mind, my beeswax amount was based on the consistency of lard. For instance, the melting point of lard is 97*, the melting point of coconut oil is 76*, and the melting point of olive oil 21*. So, if you use coconut oil as your base (which would be wonderful for your skin...just not the wallet!) you'd need to use more beeswax. If you base this cream in olive oil, you'll have to use that much more. See how that works? You have to compensate for the solidity of your oil with your beeswax.

Yes, I am seriously lacking in pictures of the following steps...sorry!

I steeped the oil for a few hours, even leaving the plants in the oil overnight. It's only getting stronger. Then I strained it out through a handkerchief and cut up garlic into the oil. I then let it sit for a few more hours. After that, I warmed it up again, strained it again, and poured it into a saucepan. You need to make sure it's strained well, and it's a million times easier if you strain it through something you can throw away when you get done. I, for one, did NOT want to try to wash all that grease out! I used old T-shirts and handkerchiefs. (BTW, the handkerchiefs are ones we only use in the kitchen!)

Now I measured out my beeswax and added it to the warm oil, which was sitting over low heat.

I then added my other ingredients...vitamin E oil, aloe vera concentrate, grapefruit seed extract, and tea tree oil.

After it was all combined well, I poured it into tins...

This stuff really does work. I don't know about y'all, but at our house, we get bit up pretty badly in the summers. You know, the itch where you wake up at 2am unconsciously scratching? Keep a tin of this by the bed, and itch-be-gone! It works on burns, scraped, bites, even diaper rash. Once Rylie had a diaper rash and cried whenever we used anything other than this jewelweed cream.

Printable recipe with normal-people-friendly amounts!

Bad Day

:(

I got an insurance bill for my car.

:-&

What does that have to do with y'all, you ask?

:-?

I need someone to drive my get-away car.

Whole Lot of Nothing...

Originally written and posted April 20, 2010.

Here are some pictures that I’m behind in posting…

When my friends came to visit, Dave took us on a hay-less hay ride. I reckon that would just be a ride? It was fun, whatever the name! Regal went with us, and stayed on the trailer….when it wasn’t moving! At least he looks happy about it!

And from when Mom and I went to Lexington… This is what we had for breakfast!
Mine:

And Mom’s:

Me driving…actually, this isn’t a picture of me driving…it’s what I saw while driving.

Mom, watching me take a picture of her while I was driving.

And where we ate supper. It’s a bad picture because it was so dark….it was, um, very late.

And get this…that’s all the pictures I took. Isn’t that so very incredibley cheesy? I have seriously got to work on that. We had a lot of fun, and a few…interesting experiences. I’ll just say that some people in Lexington (and I guess you run into this in any big city) are just plain WEIRD! And they looked at us like we were weird! What’s up with that? I bought some yarn (no way!) some fabric, a few patterns (and I know you’re saying “so how was this different than any other shopping trip you’ve ever taken?!” It was Lexington, and that’s about the only difference!) and some new rubber boots. Isn’t that last one exciting??? I have been needing some new rubber boots, and I just don’t like the ones we always get at Walmart. They’re ugly.

These are a tad more snazzy…you think?

This is what happens to my “room” when I want to sew…

Now that the cows are back out on tons of green grass, I have yellow butter again!

And finally, I did a bit of Spring Cleaning a couple of weeks ago. Cooking isn’t the only thing the stove is good for sometimes!

If someone in this house didn’t fry so much, it would be easier to clean the shelves! As it is, everything sticks to the shelf and it’s very, very icky and sticky. I had to use a scrub brush and soapy water…

Ok. I think that’s all the miscellaneous shots. If you were to call me up one of these days and ask me what I was doing, it could be anything from cooking, to sewing, to knitting, to fiddling, to sewing machine gun slings, to sewing MP40 cartridge holders. Yep, if you thought I didn’t have enough varied interests, think again. Actually, it’s not so much that I’m that interested in WWII replica stuff, but it’s a job! I do hand-sewing work for At The Front now…weird, I know. The guy I used to work for at the tack shop sent these guys my way, and now we’re working out which pieces I want to sew, etc. It’s been interesting! This afternoon I was working on the machine gun slings (that sounds so funny for me to say!) and after doing a few of them, I pulled the thread over my finger a few too many times. Owie. So, I needed a break from that for the time being…the thread had cut my finger, and it was habit to pull the thread the same way every time. After it was already cut, I wrapped and pulled the thread without even realizing it was going to hurt like the devil when it dug the cut even deeper. Ok…TMI. :)

I need to work on a blog for this past weekend, so I’m closing this one! Be back later, y’all!

For those of you who don't know, it's a tradition for Mom and me to go off for a day and go shopping around our birthdays. We usually go to Lexington, or maybe Nashville. Come to think of it, I don't think we went anywhere this year. :( Just yard saling on Saturdays...lol!

So, if you're thinking I posted an old post because I didn't do anything interesting today...you're dead right! I went to Walmart, which is about as exciting as going off in our town gets! When we first moved here, our town had a tiny Walmart. I mean, tiny. Like, you could see the back wall when you went in. Certainly not wht we were used to! We liked it though...there were no automatic doors. You know what that means? It means folks held the doors open for each other. It was nice and I really liked the atmosphere.

Well, give it a year or two, and we had us a super Walmart. Oh yay. So now, we have automatic doors and employees who won't smile at you. Maybe they're still upset over the doors...I dunno. I have a grudge against automatic doors, if you couldn't tell. Check this out.

Embarrassment.

I try to make a habit of avoiding embarrassing situations. I’d like everyone to think I’m always calm, cool, and collected, and calm, cool, collected people don’t have embarrassing moments. Or at least, they make sure no one knows about them. So here I am, about to blow away any idea that I really am calm, cool, and collected.

Sometime last year, I was leaving Walmart, and I was approaching the big sliding doors. At the same time, I was rummaging through my purse trying to find my car keys. Well, doofus blondy here wasn’t paying attention to where she was going, and the doors didn’t open quite as quickly as she had thought. So, in other words, I ran into the door with the right side of my body, with a pretty good bit of force…I was in a hurry. You know those moments where you look around and you’re SO glad no one witnessed the awful, but funny, event? I looked around…and saw this group of teenage guys walking toward me. “Maybe they didn’t see…” says I. Hm…no such luck. They not only saw, but several of them busted out laughing and when my burning face and I walked by, I heard one of them say “Did y’all see that? She ran into the door!!!” Stupid teenagers. There went a good bit of my pride.

I lost the rest of it today.

Today I went to town, went to one store, and only took my keys and wallet in, instead of my whole purse. Then I got back in the car, drove to Walmart, grabbed my purse, and a buggy, and spent a while shopping. I went to the checkout line, the lady checked me out, and announced that I owed $92-something. I smiled, grabbed my purse, went through it…and went through it…and went through it again. It wasn’t there. Did I mention there was a whole line of people behind me, too? So I had to run out to my car, get the stupid wallet, (I know, I know…the wallet wasn’t stupid…) and come back in, pay for my stuff, and try to apologize sufficiently. Sigh. Yep, I have no pride whatsoever left. I think my face was as red as the tomatoes I bought.

Now that I think about it, maybe I just won’t go to Walmart anymore! That seems to be my problem! Or I could just give up trying to appear calm, cool, and collected and act like the dingy blonde that I apparently am.

See what I mean?

That's not even what I was talking about, though. The day our super Walmart opened, we were listening to the radio and heard an interview with one of those crazy people that had to be there at Walmart when it opened. The interviewer was talking to the lady and said "a super Walmart in our town...what more could a girl want?"

What more could a girl want??? How about a JoAnn's, Hancocks, a Barnes and Nobles, for Pete's sake!!! Ok, so B & N is too expensive, but you get the point. And besides, if there were a B & N, there'd be a Starbucks.

And we'd all have to work at the new super Walmart to be able to buy all the things we'd have to have at those new stores. Ok, ok, ok...

Anyway, there's a whole lot of nothing...enjoy!

Chicken Nachos

A few days ago, I found this recipe, for chicken nachos. It looked good to me, and as I've mentioned before, we love Mexican food, so I decided to make it this week. I tweaked the recipe quite a bit, so here's my version. In addition to swithing some ingredients, I don't have a crock pot big enough to cook this in. We had a huge one, but it broke. :( So, all I have is stove-top!

Instead of the canned corn the original recipe called for, I got Rylie to cut two ears of corn off the cob.

Ok, just kidding...we're not quite there yet.

I sauteed the corn in a little butter.

Ok, so maybe I used a lot of butter...

Anything sauteed in butter makes the final dish better, right? I'm trying to figure out how I can saute the chocolate chips in butter for my cookies...

I added a little salt after the corn had been cooking a few minutes...

I added a large jar of salsa (24 oz, or somewhere around there,) you can use any kind of salsa you want...and adjust the spiciness of the final product as well, with the salsa. I used a mix of mild and medium, so that everyone would eat it!

1 can of green chilies....the original recipe said 2 oz, and I had a 4 oz can, so I did the only reasonable thing and dumped the whole can in. Yummy.

I thought it needed a can of this lime and cilantro Rotel, which I happen to be in love with. It makes everything better. :)

Now, taco seasoning...I added chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, oregano, and basil. I'm still trying to figure out why I added basil...so you can leave that one out! You don't have to buy pre-packaged taco seasoning when you have these standard spices on hand! I never measure these anymore, so I had the hardest time writing the recipe out!

Mix all of that up well, and then add 4 chicken breasts.

Mix the chicken with the sauce, cover and simmer for 3 or 4 hours.

I stirred it every 30 minutes or so, to make sure it wasn't sticking and to help break up the chicken. I added a little more salsa a couple times, to keep the consistency I wanted, and to keep it from getting too thick and sticking. Whe we were ready to eat, I made sure all the chicken was shredded and helped it along with a fork. I served it over chips, topped with sour cream, jalapenos, and I was planning on cilantro, but I forgot...I hate when I do that!

Here's the printable recipe! At least, I think that'll work...someone let me know!
